Japan on brink of recession as economy contracts, virus heightens risk

Sales tax is one of the main drivers of Japan’s Economy. Private consumption decreased by 2.9%, while capital expenditure decreased by 3.7% in fourth quarter 2019 caused by an increase in sales tax. These led to decrease in Japan’s gross domestic product (GDP) by 6.3% in fourth quarter 2019.
